"Mortally challenged"

In yesterday's post about the upcoming new HALO game (pause here while I recover my breath from cheering for a full minute), my buddy Last Redoubt pointed out that there is also a new DOOM game aimed for release pretty soon this year.

It's called DOOM Eternal, which is rather amusing given the aforementioned "Infinite" moniker for that other new installment in another landmark FPS series, and the trailer looks absolutely badass:

But that isn't what amused the hell out of my friend there.

What actually amused him was the fact that a bunch of lefty SJW types got their panties into an extremely tight wad over a couple of the lines of dialogue in the trailer.

In case you missed it, during that gameplay trailer, there is some sort of background AI character in the daemon-infested Earth Hellscape which utters some extremely funny throwaway lines:

“My brothers and sisters, let’s help top make our friends transition into our world a comfortable one.

“[…] Remember: ‘Demon’ can be an offensive term, refer to them as ‘mortally challenged’.

“[…] Earth is the melting pot of the universe.”

My sides!!! Apparently, hacking and slashing daemons to death with chainsaws and forearm bayonets and blasting them to little itty bitty pieces of blood and bone and gore isn't offensive at all, but actually calling them daemons is.

Sticks and stones (or, in this specific case, the BIG F***ING GUN 9000) may break their bones, etc...

I would love to buy a beer for whoever it was that snuck those lines into the game. That is a brilliant bit of subversive humour.

What with the next HALO game and this new DOOM installment, I think we're in good shape as far as shoot-em-ups go for a couple of years.

Now, if only we could get a real sequel, with really good graphics, to the superb 2011 "hack-and-shoot" game Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine, I think we would have enough to keep the hardest of hard-core gamers happy for a good long while.
