Let the bitches fight

The former champion of the UFC's middleweight division has some sensible words of advice to offer to any would-be white knights out there:

"When we got off the bus, that girl, Magana, was right in front of me. As I come off the bus, all I see is Cyborg run up to Magana’s face and they’re having words. I had no idea what was going on. I didn’t know if there was any beef. … I don’t follow (Magana) on Twitter so I didn’t realize what she was saying.

“Basically, Cyborg was going nuts on her, like all the words you can think of. She was screaming ‘Who the f—k do you think you are?’ and talking like this and blah, blah, blah.

“Magana was kind of quiet and shocked. She was kind of smiling, like a nervous smile. I was thinking, ‘Oh my God’ because she’s way smaller than Cyborg.”

Then things start to change as Magana decides to chirp back.

“All of sudden (Magana) realizes what’s going on around her,” Weidman said. “She sees that there are a lot of people around and she sees cameras coming out. She grew some balls and all of sudden she starts cursing back at Cyborg. I was thinking, ‘That’s not smart.’”

This is where Weidman decided that he needed to step in and break the two ladies up. But that didn’t exactly go as he expected:

“I came in like, ‘C’mon, guys, let’s calm it down,’ and as soon (as I did that) Cyborg just stops screaming at Magana, looks at me and says, ‘Don’t touch me.’

“I was like, ‘Alright, I’m good!’”

Right after he backed away, Cyborg hit her according to Weidman. He said that Magana got “teary-eyed” and started talking about calling the police.

At first, Weidman thought Cyborg was in the wrong for her actions because he had no idea about Magana’s social media exploits in her direction. Once he was made aware of it, his opinion changed a little bit:

“If someone was talking s—t like that about me, I’d probably have something to say to them the next time I see them and we could probably be fighting. I do see where Cyborg went with that.

“Unfortunately, in the world we live in today there are cops and lawsuits, so you can’t just punch people. You have to find other ways to resolve your issues.”

He then added a hilarious footnote to the story, which doesn’t shed him in the best light. Weidman is pretty good-natured about the whole thing though in telling the story:

“The best part of it is, Dana White has the video,” Weidman said. “He showed me at this thing (we did), but I don’t know if he’s ever going to release it. It is hysterical the way I backtracked.

“They were busting my balls but I have no shame. What am I going to do, step in there to Cyborg and say, ‘No, I will touch you’ and she kicks my ass? What am I gonna do kick her ass? Either way, I’m screwed.

“What if she knocked me out? I may as well just retire then.”

Chris Weidman was entirely correct to walk away from this whole incident between the two female fighters in question. There was no upside for him- and there is no upside in general for any man who decides to try to step in and stop two women from beating each other up.

This is not because Mr. Weidman would not be able to handle the situation. He was at one time, and in some ways still is, one of the most dangerous men on the planet. He walks around at about 205lbs- he's bigger and heavier than me, and I'm not exactly a flyweight. He has fought and defeated some of the best and most dangerous fighters in the world- including one Anderson Silva, who still holds the UFC record for the most consecutive title defences.

He was an outstanding NCAA wrestler, holds a BJJ black belt under Renzo Gracie, and trains under one of the best coaches in the business.

Suffice to say, Chris Weidman is not exactly your average untrained cocky idiot on the street.

Even so, he was absolutely right to step away.

One of the two women involved, Cristiane "Cyborg" Justino, is probably the scariest female fighter alive today. She walks around at 170lbs and her standard approach to her MMA fights is to simply overwhelm her opponents with a flurry of brutal strikes that seem to come from everywhere at once.

She is one of the very few women anywhere who could actually take on the bigger male fighters and potentially win.

(Granted, this may well be due to the steroids that Ms. Justino absolutely did, and possibly still does, consume. It comes as no surprise that she looks, and sounds, rather like a dude.)

Worse, there is no upside whatsoever for a man to step into a situation like this.

Whether it is a fight between two women, or a man and a woman (which is arguably the case whenever "Cyborg" gets into a fight with any woman*), any man who attempts to step in to break things up faces the very real possibility of being knocked on his ass, or of having to strike a woman.

And if he gets knocked on his ass by a woman, well, that is when the humiliation level shoots straight over 9000.

As I wrote almost 3 years ago, not only is it likely that the woman in the situation will turn on you, but if you then attempt to defend yourself against her, you immediately risk getting hurt and humiliated in the court of public opinion.

Trying to save a woman from her own idiocy in public just isn't worth the trouble, especially not these days. If women are indeed the wonderful strong independent ladies- and I use that term very loosely- that they want us to believe that they are, then they can take care of themselves.

And if they cannot... then they bloody well need to learn a very painful lesson about the consequences of shooting off one's mouth.

*Yeah, I know. Cheap shot. Are you really inclined to disagree?
